Crafting Costumes

Well this blog's a little overdue...

I wanted to write about this during Halloween, but I was busy with schoolwork stuff so I never had the chance to. I'm now writing this on Christmas day, so I'm only like 2 months late.

Anyways, on with the actual stuff I wanted to write about: Growing up, I've always enjoyed character day: a day at my school where we're all supposed to dress up as some character from some movie or show. It's basically a dress up day outside of Halloween since my school doesn't celebrate Halloween.

I've enjoyed these dress up days for two reasons: I enjoyed crafting my own costume and enjoyed wearing it around the school. Showing off your costume is sort of self explanatory - it's sort of fun to show off what characters you like and show off your portrayal of said character.

But I also really enjoy crafting my costume up. I don't remember how I started doing this, but almost every year, once I figured out what character I would want to go as, my dad and I will just spend some time putting together the costume. At least as far as I remember, I don't think we've ever bought a full costume straight up.

I would look up a bunch of pictures of the character I wanted to go as on the internet. I'd then break down each individual part of their fit and think of how I could recreate it in a creative way. Then, I'd go to my dad with my idea and we would build the costume together.

Over the years, I did all kinds of characters. I did Po from Kung Fu Panda, Thor, Dr. Strange, and Loki just to name a few [ I love Marvel :) ]. Every year, it was always a pleasure crafting the costume and then wearing it around the school.

Now that I'm in Canada for my undergrad, if I want a costume for Halloween, I'm gonna have to make it all myself. I did a lazy Konshu costume in first year (I bought a bird mask), and did an even lazier Rick Astley costume in second year. This year, however, I went to see my friend at Dartmouth during Halloween. My friend told me that him and all his friends are dressing up, so I felt a pressure to perform and not disappoint.

I was quite satisfied with my costume this year. I ended up going as a Barbarian from Clash of Clans. I made the whole Barbarian head and the sword from paper.

This simple craft made me quite proud of myself. I always had a feeling that I could build my costumes by myself, but this experience really proved my skills. With this, I proved myself capable of making such costumes.

We'll see what I end dressing up as for next year.
